If Putin is indeed backing away from the "Pause" theory of victory, (and not feigning this for the sake of increasing pressure on the tentative Western powers), then this suggests that he has concluded the pause option has been foreclosed. Why would he come to that conclusion?Perhaps resources and capacities he was counting on to rebuild and re-arm during a pause are now starting to disappear and he sees a need to act sooner rather than later.

Putin’s proposal is ridiculous. Actually helps solidify Western resolve as it underscores Russia’s imperialist intent. Further indicates Putin’s weak grasp of the situation, internationally, internally, and tactical realities within Ukraine.

It's curious that NATO had no trouble involving itself in Afghanistan quarter of a world away and of little strategic importance, but is so hesitant when the challenge is not only strategically vital but right on its doorstep. The Russians are sitting in place allowing the enemy to enter the battle space. It is then identified, targeted and destroyed. NATO and the USA will eventually abandon Ukraine as they did in Afghanistan but for the time being there are war profits to be made.

I think you're misinterpreting Biden's actions. I think there may have been the feeling in the beginning fighting Putin was futile. But after that any appearance of reluctance was simply politics both internally to the US and between the allies.

We all know Putin does not want peace. He wants all of Ukraine. So, his 'peace proposal' is a JOKE.

He also said a three-word phrase, which is IMO, the most under reported and glossed over part of his speech; that when he got everything he was demanding, "negotiations will start". Negotiations for what, exactly? If he gets what he demands in this speech, what is there to negotiate? What he is asking for is not the sum total of what he intends to take. He wants more but is not prepared to say what that is partly because he doesn't have a limit and partly because he thinks if he just says what is in his mind as minimal, that Ukraine and the west will cave and that will set the stage for his increasing, never ending demands. He's already talking about Eastern Europe and he's mentioned Alaska in the past too. They won't be "negotiations". They will be demands followed by threats if he doesn't get what he wants.

Man, you are again with this thing of "Oh! The West is a failure because it has not a strategy"... so, what strategy you want??? attacking Russia? Taking all NATO to fight in Ukraine? The West IS doing what it has to do. Step by step, taking time to cut economical links with Russia, while Russia gets undermined, rising the military production to be ready (which takes time), working in planetary diplomacy (which takes time), crossing little by little the "red lines" that the bully imposed, imposing sanctions but in a gradual way in order for the West not to be too affected by it, etc.... and all of this is working, in the pace it has to, instead of getting abruptly into a massive war (not even being ready for it). The prove that is working is actually that Putin is begging for the territory he could not get in these two years.

Ukraine has already lost control of some territory to Russia. The part that Kyiv is against is a ceasefire along current lines of control. And Kyiv's position would be acceptable IF Ukraine had a way for itself to take back that lost territory, but it doesn't, so day after day Ukraine demands more military assistance (even though simply getting more Western weapons is insufficient to run an offensive land operation that retakes something vast such as Crimea). Kyiv's answer is ALWAYS the same: send more weapons and money. The above presents a disconnect: if Kyiv wants to retake currently lost territory, then it alone can set the rules for a ceasefire only if it doesn't need outside aid. Ukrainians have a real problem with the concept that IF they require outside aid, that those outside helpers have a voice in a ceasefire. ...and that brings us back to the current moment in time where both Russia and Ukraine are slaughtering each others troops for no serious change in the front line. We saw something quite similar to that status back 1950-1953 in the Korean War where both North Korea and South Korea wanted all of the land of Korea so the 2 sides were slaughtering their troops for no real change in the front line, so Eisenhower negotiated an Armistice that at least stopped the bloodshed there. True, that Armistice didn't give all of Korea to one side or the other, but the armies on both sides weren't getting all of the land via combat, either... so at least negotiating an end to the carnage saved lives. Ukraine and Russia should be so lucky today.

Putin is either bluffing or he has a weapon against the collective west we don't know about it. This weapon could be a mixed propaganda that penetrated the minds of democratic world , help coming to Putin from some powerful economical and financial entities from west side, the lethargy of over indulging generations of too liberal and democratic west. Each day it gets more and more clear that what bothers Putin is not that NATO has expanded in Eastern Europe, but the fact that THAT doesn't let him invade the whole East-Central Europe. He knows perfectly that NATO is not a threat to Russia, but he is angry because the presence of NATO prevents him to invade all ex soviet countries. Actually, the invasion of Ukraine is the absolute prove that Putin would have already invaded Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia... if these countries would not be in NATO.

I think Putin is losing. His losses are far too high. His gains are negligible, compared to his losses. Russian society will not tolerate nor sustain this indefinitely.
